Summary

This unit blends work on ratio and algebra to consider graphical representations of circles, inequalities and direct and inverse proportionality.  Initially building on work from Unit 3, linear proportionality is further explored and linked to linear graphs.  Other types of direct proportion are developed including proportionality to x² and x³ and algebraic solutions are linked to graphical representations of the equations.  Understanding of inverse proportion is developed and linked to reciprocal functions, features of which are explored and used.  Graphs of reciprocal functions are drawn and used to solve contextualised problems.  The next lesson in the unit develops earlier work on solving linear inequalities (Unit 10) by exploring linear inequalities in two variables, finding a graphical solution and presenting the solution on the graph, using shading.  In the final lesson of this unit students understand how to find, state and use the equation of a circle.
