Mathematics Mastery

Summary

This unit develops students’ understanding of algebra, focusing in particular on quadratic equations; methods of solving them and their graphical interpretation.  Following a well-paced recap of factorising quadratic equations, previously dealt with in Unit 8, the first lesson considers the solving of quadratic equations by factorising. This is then linked to work on graphs of quadratic equations, their key features and the interpretation of them in context.  Quadratic inequalities are tackled in lesson 3, applying the skills developed to solve quadratic equations, to find a range of solutions to a quadratic inequality and to represent the solution on a number line and using set notation.  Following this, the unit returns to consider further methods for finding solutions to quadratic equations; completing the square and the derivation and use of the quadratic formula. The unit is rounded off by the consideration of problems, some contextualised, involving quadratic equations.
