Topic Area 3: Summary

For first teaching in September 2022

These teaching materials cover Topic Area 3: Evaluating design ideas for Unit R038: Principles of engineering design.

The first three lessons in this unit cover the different types of drawing used in engineering, their typical application and relative merits. The standard conventions used in working drawings are covered in the fourth lesson, including reference to BS 8888. The penultimate lesson covers line types and common abbreviations whilst revisiting some earlier learning. Finally, lesson 6 examines how mechanical features are represented in engineering drawings, and how the use of CAD drawing software compares to manual drawing techniques.

The Engineering Design Teaching Series has been written to satisfy the specification for the elements assessed by written examination for the OCR Cambridge Nationals in Engineering Design J822 Level 1/2 specification. Each pack contains:

  • PowerPoint slides for each lesson
  • Detailed lesson plans
  • Learning objectives and outcomes
  • Worksheets and homework activities with answers
  • End-of-unit Assessment test with answers
  • Other material and links to online resources
