Summary

Put pupils’ problem-solving skills to the test in designing for different needs and individuals using short practical activities.

This unit enables students to understand how products are created to solve users’ needs and wants. It is set in a context that ensures empathy is used to realise that everybody is different and may have very specific requirements. Starting with product analysis, students are taught to question form, function and accessibility in order to decide on design criteria in the form of a specification. Through practical activities, students experience physical restrictions allowing them to empathise with disabled users, arming them with motivation to design and make innovative prototypes using iterative design. Reflection and critical evaluation is encouraged throughout the unit.

What people say...

I really do think your resources are excellent. I very rarely use other people's resources but the quality has been so excellent even I cannot say no!

Matt Lowe. Head of Computer Science, Barton Court Grammar School

The key strengths of the materials are in their simplicity - you have the content pupils need to know, simply, attractively presented and then a well designed worksheet to test it. The worksheets look excellent and very effective as a tool to cement the learning.

Dr Bruce Geddes. Head of Curriculum, British School Kuala Lumpur
