Summary

This theoretical teaching unit covers the metals specialist material area as part of section 3.2 of the AQA 9-1 specification 8552. It is subdivided into three topics plus an end-of-unit assessment. The processing and sustainability of extracting metals from ore is covered in the first lesson before looking at stock forms and their advantages in the second. A range of fixing techniques is covered, including riveting, brazing and welding. School and commercial pressing, turning and casting methods are also covered with specific reference to cooking utensils and hand tools. Quality control is introduced, incorporating the use of a depth stop when drilling. Finally, various surface treatments and finishes are characterised.
