Summary

The unit is subdivided into six learning hours plus an end-of-unit assessment spread across seven lessons in order to fit with most school timetables. It is a theoretical unit covering the latest AQA Computer Science specification 8525. The conversion of integers from decimal to binary is covered in the first lesson, together with the binary addition of up to three numbers and binary shifts. In subsequent lessons, the use of hexadecimal numbers and character encoding is described. Representation of images and sound are covered in two separate lessons with a final lesson covering lossy compression techniques used for images, sound and video, and lossless techniques such as RLE and Huffman encoding. In the final lesson students sit an assessment test comprising questions similar to those found on the GCSE exam paper.

What people say...

I have been delighted with the resources so far, and the new textbooks.

Richard Curtis. Head of Computer Science, St Benedict’s School

We just wanted to say a massive thank you to you and your team for the units we purchased. They have made such a difference to the staff. The teacher now has a work - life balance and can come into school, and leave at a normal time. He now has more time for revision sessions during the busy exam period, has a proper break during the day and the students are more engaged with their learning.

Joanne Vance. Assistant Headteacher, Hollis Academy
